The potential impact of climate change on energy consumption, natural resources, human health, and the economy is driving the research and development of solutions to decrease the energy footprint of built environments and to design sustainable, high-efficiency buildings.

At the heart of the issue are a few simple facts about commercial and residential buildings:

• 40% of the world’s natural resources are consumed by buildings. (Source: U.S. Department of Energy)
• 70% of total US electricity is consumed by buildings. (Source: U.S. Department of Energy)
• It is estimated that 30% of energy consumption in a commercial building is inefficient. (Source: US Environmental Protection Agency)
• Buildings account for 30% of Greenhouse Gas Emissions. (Source: US Green Building Council)
• Deficiencies in indoor environmental quality are estimated to cost the US economy up to $258 billion annually in lost worker productivity.

25% of landfill content is construction waste. (Source: Design e2/PBS)

Increasing public and private sector demand for energy-efficient HVAC and lighting systems, high-performance building design, clean and renewable energy, and on-site power generation is catalyzing a growing market for sustainable technologies and services.

The 7th Annual Syracuse Symposium on Environmental and Energy Systems, presented by the Syracuse Center of Excellence, will focus on “Building Innovations for Climate Change” and survey the latest ideas and advancements in the growing field of sustainable design.

Topics slated for the 2007 Syracuse CoE Symposium include:
High-Performance Buildings—Advances in technologies and materials, design elements, and intelligent building systems.
Environmental Systems R&D—Advances regarding human health and productivity, urban ecosystems, and indoor environmental quality.
Energy Systems R&D—Advances in clean and renewable energy, integrated heating and cooling systems, and sustainable, on-site power generation.

This year's Post-Symposium Workshop, hosted by the Syracuse CoE Office for Industry Collaboration, is titled "Developing Sustainable Practice: Strategic Planning, Operations, & Management."
